You Are the Salt of the Earth

Salt is one of the most important ingredients in our kitchens. It enhances flavour, helps preserve food, and even plays an important role in maintaining our health. It is amazing how something so small can make such a big difference.

It is no surprise, then, that Jesus describes His followers as "the salt of the earth."

"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men."—Matthew 5:13 (KJV)

As I reflected on this Scripture, I could not help but think about our homes. As parents, we are the salt of our homes. Just as salt enhances flavour, preserves what is good, and brings out the best in what it touches, we are called to enhance the atmosphere of our homes, preserve peace within our families, and season our homes with God's love, wisdom, and truth.

But in the same verse, Jesus also gives us a warning:

"If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?"—Matthew 5:13 (KJV)

How could salt lose its saltiness? I asked.

In Jesus' day, much of the salt came mixed with other minerals. If rain or moisture washed through it, the true salt could dissolve away, leaving behind something that looked like salt but had lost its usefulness.

Jesus used this picture to remind us that we, too, can lose our spiritual effectiveness.

In Mark's Gospel, He adds:

"Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."—Mark 9:50 (KJV)

As mothers, we must make every effort to guard our "saltiness." We cannot effectively season our homes or pour into our children if we are spiritually empty. We cannot preserve peace, bring healing, or strengthen our families if we lose the very qualities God desires to work through us.

How then can we maintain our saltiness?

Jesus gives us the answer:

"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."—John 15:5 (KJV)

Our saltiness is maintained by staying connected to Him. We do this by:

  • Making reading God's Word a priority.

  • Making time for prayer and worship.

  • Enjoying daily fellowship with Him.

As we remain connected to Christ, His life is reflected through us. We begin to bear good fruit—we become more loving, more patient, more peaceful, more gracious, and better able to serve our families in a way that honours Him.

Another way we maintain our saltiness and honour God is by caring for the bodies and minds He has given us. We need to make time to rest, no matter how busy life becomes, and, when necessary, cut back on activities that rob us of our peace and effectiveness. As we do, we are better able to serve our families in alignment with God's purpose.

Today, make a plan to set aside even fifteen minutes of quiet time to rest, meet with God, and renew your mind.

Remain connected to the Source. As you do, God will continue to work through you to bless your children and your home.

Reflection

Today, we learned that salt does more than add flavour—it preserves, strengthens, and brings out the best in what it touches.

As you go about your day, reflect on His words:

"...Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."—Mark 9:50 (KJV)

Ask yourself:

  • How can I remain "salty" today?

  • How can God use me to bring peace, wisdom, and stability into my home today?

  • How can I encourage, strengthen, or preserve what God is doing in my child's life today?

May God bless you as you remain connected to the Source of life, so that you may continue to be the salt of your home.

Happy weekend!
