Confessing God's Word Against All Odds

Speaking in faith when everything around us points to a bleak reality is not easy.
It is not easy to look at a sickness that refuses to improve, a financial situation that seems impossible, a broken relationship, an unanswered prayer, or a child who is struggling—and still see a different reality.
Yet this is exactly what Scripture calls us to do. It invites us to look beyond what our eyes can see and respond to every situation with the promises of God's Word.
It means looking at sickness and standing on God's promise: "With his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5).
It means looking at lack and remembering, "My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
It means looking at fear and declaring, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).
It means looking at a child who is struggling and believing God's promise: "For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" (Proverbs 2:6).
Speaking in faith when reality says otherwise is like climbing a steep rock hill. Every step feels difficult because you are walking against what your eyes are telling you.
One person who lived this out in a remarkable way was Dodie Osteen, the mother of American evangelist Joel Osteen.
In 1981, she was diagnosed with metastatic cancer of the liver. Doctors told her she had only weeks to live.
Instead of allowing fear or the medical report to have the final word, she searched the Scriptures for every promise she could find about healing—about 39 in all.
Day after day, she read those Scriptures aloud. She often said that she was taking God's medicine and that she could not miss a day without "drinking" God's Word.
God restored her health, and for more than forty years she shared her testimony of His faithfulness before her passing in 2025 at age 92.
Every person's journey is different. For some, God heals instantly; for others, healing comes over time, often alongside medical care. There is no conflict between trusting God and following the treatment He has made available through doctors.
Yet whatever the journey looks like, filling our hearts and mouths with God's Word strengthens our faith and invites us to continue trusting the Great Physician, who is able to bring healing to every area of our lives.
Her practice reminds us that Scripture itself speaks of God's Word as something to be received and treasured. Jeremiah declared, "Thy words were found, and I did eat them" (Jeremiah 15:16).
Proverbs likewise reminds us to keep God's Word in our hearts: "For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh" (Proverbs 4:20–22).
Like Dodie, whatever challenge you are facing today, search the Scriptures for God's promises concerning that situation. Hold God's promises up against your circumstances, and choose to stand on His Word rather than on what your situation is saying.
Choose to agree with what God is saying about you despite the pain, fear, or anxiety your reality may be presenting.
What we must remember is this: the reality before us does not cancel what God has promised. His Word is flawless. It never lies. It never fails.
Through the finished work of Jesus Christ, the victory has already been won.
What does this look like for you?
As we saw in yesterday's devotion, God's Word is itself a weapon. Confessing God's Word means agreeing with what He says about your situation.
Today, find one promise in God's Word that speaks directly to what you are facing. Read it. Meditate on it. Make it your daily confession. Speak it every time fear, doubt, or discouragement tries to take hold.
Like Dodie Osteen, we too can choose to stand on God's promises rather than on what our circumstances are saying.
If you would like to meditate on the healing Scriptures Dodie Osteen confessed each day, you may find this video encouraging:

Reflection
As you go about your day, meditate on these words:
"God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?"
—Numbers 23:19 (KJV)
Then ask yourself:
What is my situation saying to me?
What is God saying through His Word?
Which one am I believing more?
How can I begin building my confidence in God's Word today?
Prayer
May the God of hope meet you and your loved ones at the point of your need. May He strengthen your heart and your spirit as you navigate the season you are in.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
