The Holy Spirit—God's Gift to Every Believer

Do you have a friend you know would come to your aid if things were not going well?

A friend who would leave everything to be with you when you needed them most.

If you called that friend today, would they answer?

Take a moment to think about it. Which of your friends could you count on through every season—someone who would stand by you through thick and thin?

Everything you admire in that friend—being present, helping, comforting, standing by you—the Holy Spirit does all of that, and infinitely more. Just as you would call your friend when you need help, you can call on the Holy Spirit and be confident that He is there with you.

Many years ago, I experienced His invaluable help as a friend.

One summer day, what began as a relaxing outing quickly became frightening. I had taken the children on a kayaking adventure. As a non-swimmer, I had assured myself that I would not go too far—just far enough that if I fell into the water, I could still stand.

But the current had other ideas. It carried my kayak farther from shore than I intended, and despite my efforts, I could not get back.

Every stroke of my paddle seemed to take me farther and farther from the harbour until I found myself on the other side of the lake.

As panic began to set in and I imagined the worst, I remembered a simple prayer a priest friend had once taught me:

"Come, Holy Spirit, come."

He had once said to me, "If the Holy Spirit is truly your Helper, why wouldn't you call on Him when you need help?"

So I did.

I cried those words over and over again. I must have called out more than one hundred times because, afterwards, the children said they could hear me repeating something.

To this day, I am convinced the Holy Spirit helped me.

Somehow, my kayak turned and began moving back toward the harbour.

That experience forever changed the way I think about the Holy Spirit. He is not simply a subject to study or a passing reference in Scripture. He is God's presence with us—our Helper in every circumstance.

Since then, I have often wondered how many opportunities we miss because we forget to invite the Holy Spirit into our daily lives or simply ask for His help.

I have since realized that the Holy Spirit plays a much greater role in our lives than I had ever imagined.

So, who is the Holy Spirit, and what is His role in our lives?

The Holy Spirit was at work from the very beginning of Jesus' earthly life. When Mary asked the angel how she, a virgin, could bear a son, the angel answered:

"The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee..."—Luke 1:35 (KJV)

The Holy Spirit accomplished what no human being could accomplish. God's purpose was fulfilled through His power.

Years later, before Jesus returned to the Father, He prepared His disciples for His departure by promising they would not be left alone.

"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth... for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."—John 14:16–17 (KJV)

Jesus later explained why His departure was actually for their good.

"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you."—John 16:7 (KJV)

After His resurrection, Jesus instructed His disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they had received "the promise of the Father." He knew how much they would need the Holy Spirit to fulfill the work He had entrusted to them.

When the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost, everything changed.

The fearful disciples became bold, preaching Christ without fear.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God confirmed their message with signs and miracles. The blind received their sight, the lame walked, and lives were transformed.

The Holy Spirit revealed hidden things, as in the account of Ananias and Sapphira.

He guided the Church's mission, saying,

"Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them."—Acts 13:2 (KJV)

Then He sent them out.

"So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed..."—Acts 13:4 (KJV)

He directed their decisions, closed some doors, opened others, and warned them of danger, as He did when Paul was warned through the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem (Acts 21:4).

As you read the book of Acts, one thing becomes clear: no detail of the apostles' lives or ministry was left untouched by the Holy Spirit. He was involved in their preaching, their decisions, their journeys, their leadership, their prayers, and their daily work.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit can do the same in our lives today.

As parents, we need His wisdom to understand our children's hearts. We need His guidance when making decisions, His comfort during difficult seasons, His strength when we are weary, and His help when we do not know how to pray. When we welcome Him into our daily lives and learn to listen to His voice, He shapes our thoughts, directs our steps, and leads us according to God's purposes.

The more I learned about the Holy Spirit in Scripture, the more I realized that He is one of God's greatest gifts to believers, yet He is also one of the most underused.

Every part of our lives should involve Him.

David Yonggi Cho once described his relationship with the Holy Spirit this way:

"Every morning when I awake I greet the Holy Spirit and invite Him to go with me through the day and take the lead in all my affairs... Every evening before retiring I say again, 'It's been a wonderful day working with You, Holy Spirit.'"

His words paint a beautiful picture of daily fellowship with the Holy Spirit that is worth emulating.

What does daily fellowship with the Holy Spirit look like?

When the Holy Spirit is active in our lives, we begin to experience what the Scriptures promise.

He is our Comforter. When you are anxious, grieving, or overwhelmed, ask the Holy Spirit to comfort you (John 14:16–17).

He is our Teacher. Ask Him to help you understand God's Word. He also reminds us of Scripture when we need it most, bringing God's truth to our minds to guide, strengthen, or comfort us (John 14:26).

He is our Guide. When you do not know which way to go or are faced with an important decision, ask Him to direct your steps.

He reveals truth. Just as He revealed hidden things in the book of Acts, ask Him to open your eyes to what you need to see in your family or in the life of a particular child.

He helps us pray. When we do not know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us according to the will of God (Romans 8:26–27). Ask Him to pray with you and align your prayers with God's purpose.

He gives wisdom. Whenever you need wisdom, ask Him to guide your thoughts and decisions. The Holy Spirit knows the Father's heart better than anyone else, and we can trust His leading.

Today, let us begin to see the Holy Spirit as God's precious gift—not only for extraordinary moments, but for ordinary, everyday life.

Let us invite Him into every decision, every conversation, our parenting, our work, our prayers, and our struggles.

Just as the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and God's purpose was accomplished through her, let us surrender ourselves to Him and invite His presence to overshadow our lives, so that God's purposes may be accomplished in us.

He was sent to help us walk with Christ every single day, and He is ready whenever we are ready to walk with Him.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."—Romans 15:13 (NIV)

As you go about your day, reflect on these questions:

• Am I relying on my own strength, or am I inviting the Holy Spirit to guide me?

• Am I inviting Him into every area of my life—even the small, ordinary moments?

  
  

You may say this prayer: "Come, Holy Spirit, come," continuously as you walk through your day, inviting Him into every moment, including difficult times.
